Welcome to your Shoespo!
When Sarah Jessica Parker burst onto our screens as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex And The City in 1998, change was in the air. Four women in lead roles – on prime time television – were talking frankly about sex and relationships, drinking cosmos and looking (in Samantha’s words): FAB-U-LOUS.
Of course Carrie’s love affair with shoes was only rivalled by her love for New York, and every Monday night women would gather round the TV to watch running through New York City streets in skyscraper stilettos, famously charging a bag of tomatoes to her credit card so she could afford her next pair of Manolo Blahniks or Jimmy Choos. Her footwear became as much a part of the show as Mr Big or the Big Apple itself.
So when I heard Sarah Jessica Parker had created her own shoe line – SJP – I couldn’t help but wonder: is walking a mile in Carrie’s shoes all it’s cracked up to be?
SJP • Carrie
Meet Carrie – SJP’s homage to her SATC character, and the shoe I was most drawn to when I first viewed the collection. So quintessentially Carrie: a delicate T-Bar, the perfect shade of red, super high heels and – in a nod to Sarah Jessica’s childhood – a strip of grosgrain ribbon running down the back of the heel:
Since SJP first launched in 2014, Carrie has become wildly popular, with many seasonal variations on her initial design, including colourways, heel height and textures. But the most amazing of these, for me, is Poison, a visceral metallic red effect (I’m thinking “Wicked Stepmother in Snow White”):
Because if there’s one thing I learned from SATC, it’s this: things don’t always go our way: people can leave, jobs disappear, priorities change. And even if the BIG fairytale does come true, it doesn’t guarantee a trouble-free life. Maybe it’s more about learning to get up, show up, put on our red shoes and dance in that rain.
Life’s too short … wear the red shoes,
